Keep an excellent oral hygiene is extremely important to the success of your orthodontic treatment. Fail to maintain a very good oral hygiene could result in cavities, gum diseases, or we have to remove the braces before the treatment is complete. To prevent the above happening, you should

  • Brush your teeth with the prescribed fluoride toothpaste after every meal. Use only a very small amount of the prescribed fluoride toothpaste and avoid swallowing the paste. When brushing the bracket side of the teeth, brush both the areas below and above the braces separately and spend more time on brushing the areas between the gum and the wire. A proxy brush or interdental brush can help to remove the food debris between the teeth very efficiently. We highly recommend the parents of the brace patient to carefully check your child's teeth in the morning and before bed. Be sure that the teeth look clean and free from food debris and white, sticky plaque. If the teeth are not clean, send your child to brush again or take over and brush and floss the child's teeth yourself. You may also refer to this video on how to brush your teeth with braces using a manual brush.
  • If you use the electric tooth brush, we recommend you to switch to a orthodontic brush head during the braces treatment, such as Oral-B Braces Care.
  • Floss your teeth after every meal using orthodontic flossThoroughly floss the teeth before bed is extremely important.
  • Fluoride mouth rinse is a plus but cannot replace brushing and flossing. It's effective only if used after thorough brushing and flossing.
  • Other products such as Air Floss and Waterpik are also found useful by many braces wearers.
